When a chiller needs a service call
Chillers rarely fail without warning. These are the symptoms worth acting on before they turn into a breakdown.

Leaving water temperature rising
If the chiller cannot hold its chilled-water setpoint, the cause can be low refrigerant charge, fouled evaporator or condenser tubes, or a compressor losing capacity.

High head pressure
High condensing pressure makes the compressor work harder and can trip the unit. Dirty condenser coils, failed fans or non-condensables in the circuit are common causes.

Low oil pressure or oil loss
Oil-pressure alarms or oil disappearing from the sight glass need attention quickly, as lubrication problems lead straight to compressor damage.

Short cycling
A chiller that starts and stops repeatedly wears its compressor motor and starters. Control settings, refrigerant charge and water-flow problems are the usual suspects.

Controller alarms and nuisance trips
Repeated alarms on the microprocessor controller are worth logging and investigating rather than resetting. Control upgrades can also bring older plants up to date.
